A Time For Heroes – Chapter 15

Mission PrepGinny slept right through her alarm and didn’t even move until 8 o’clock. That gave her just enough time for a quick shower and to get dressed before going to find food and Steve.

She grabbed some fruit and ran up to the arena. She opened the door slowly so as not to disturb whatever was going on.

Steve and JP were sparring and JP seemed to be getting the best of Steve, but it turned out JP was showing him some new technique for the next time he sparred with Thor.

They broke apart when Ginny came in and JP came over and shook her hand.

“Steve tells me you threw Romanov around for a couple of hours last night. Well done!” JP said.

“More like she threw me around.” Ginny eased a sore muscle in her neck.

“I’ve never gone up against her, but I’ve never seen anyone else last two hours against her, either.” Steve said, taking his gloves off.

“She is…amazing.” Ginny said. “Such deadly grace. I learned so much last night.”

Steve had picked up his tablet and brought it over to where she and JP were standing.

“We need to go over scheduling.” Steve said in his best Captain voice. “We have less than a week to get you up to speed.”

They looked at his schedule together. He had scheduled her from 10 to 3:30 at the hospital.

“You still need to spend some time with Joseph, right? And Bucky? Can we use the time between your visits with your dad for that? And this weekend, I can help you move in here. Bring whatever you’ll need for the mission. It’ll be easier than trying to juggle two residences.”

“Are you ever moving back to your place?” Ginny asked. He’d been living at the hospital or Stark Tower since she’d known him.

“Once this is over.” he said, not looking up.

“Let me see if I can get Bucky to pick you up at the hospital and take you to the workshop today. I can text you details.” He made a note on the tablet.

“And I hope today goes better with your dad than yesterday, but if not, let me know and we can use that time, okay?” he finished.

JP was behind her and she looked up at Steve and mouthed “Commander-y” which made him smile.

He reached over and touched her shoulder. “Are you driving over today?” he asked. Continue reading “A Time For Heroes – Chapter 15”

A Time for Heroes – Chapter 14

Revelations in the Great RoomGinny slept soundly and woke up at 6:00 am. By 6:30, she was showered and in the kitchen for breakfast with Steve and Tony.

The chopper ride was less than half an hour and they arrived just as the first kids started to wander in. When Chris arrived, she took a few minutes to introduce him and ask everyone to tell a little bit about themselves.

Sarah talked about the house fire where she’d lost arm and her suicide attempt the week before; the others all gave some detail about their amputation and how they dealt with it.

When it got to Ginny, she was going to pass it as she usually did, but decided not to this time.

“I’m the only one here who isn’t an amputee.” she started. “When I was 8, my parents were in a car accident. My mom was killed instantly. My dad was badly injured and recovered from most of his injuries, but his left leg was crushed in the collision and the doctors were unable to save it.”

“So I was an 8 year old girl with no mom and a dad who disappeared into his desolation and I hated him for it.”

Steve looked up at her at this.

“Luckily, we lived very near my aunt and uncle, who adopted me and they saved my life.”

“My dad was an engineer and after the accident, he returned to work. Eventually, he began to redesign his prosthetic leg…he found what he had clunky and poorly designed. Most of you are wearing my dad’s prosthetic limbs as are most amputees. His designs are now used world-wide. This is what saved his life.”

“Now Papa Claude is upstairs recovering from a heart attack. All that French food, I suspect.” she said with a smile. “Let’s make him some cards later. I know he would appreciate it.”

“Is he going to be okay?” Sean asked.

“The doctors seem to think so.” she answered.

“I’m going to draw him a butterfly.” Annalisa said. Continue reading “A Time for Heroes – Chapter 14”

A Time for Heroes – Chapter 13

Mission RequestGinny managed to sleep until 5 am. Her sleep had been sporadic and interrupted but she felt fairly rested and a little more positive than she had the night before.

So she got up, had a shower and read the news on her tablet over a cup of coffee. She had no idea where she’d be sleeping tonight, so she packed a bag just in case.

She had to adjust the seat in her car from Steve driving her home the night before. She took a deep breath in through her nose and could still catch a whiff of him in her car.

She smiled and thought, Papa, you’re wrong about him.

Thoughts of her dad brought her up short and she checked her phone to make sure she hadn’t missed any calls from the hospital.

Nothing, which she hoped meant he had had a good night.

She looked through what she had for music and settled on ABBA…really cheesy disco music…just what she needed to get her in the mood to run.

Traffic was light that time of morning and her half hour drive was spent singing ‘Mama Mia’ at the top of her lungs and seat dancing at red lights.

It was 6:15 when she pulled into the garage at Stark Tower. A little early, so she organized her briefcase before heading for the elevator.

Jarvis was as chipper as ever, telling her that Mr. Stark and Captain Rogers were in the kitchen and that Ms. Potts had left late the night before for an early meeting out of town.

Steve got up to greet her with a quick kiss and a hug when she came into the room.

Tony didn’t get up, but asked, “How was your night? Did you get some sleep?”

“It was restless, but I did manage to sleep a little bit. BJ Birdie helped.” She smiled and winked at Steve.

“BJ Birdie?” Tony was looking at both of them, puzzled.

“The Toronto Blue Jay’s mascot.” Steve answered with a smile. “My competition.”

She rolled her eyes at him. “I highly doubt that.” she said. “And it’s Torono, not Toronto. If I ever take you up there, they’ll have you pegged as a tourist before we cross the border talking like that!” Continue reading “A Time for Heroes – Chapter 13”

A Time for Heroes – Chapter 12

Broken HeartSteve liked defending against weapons fire. They didn’t fire real bullets but rubber bullets, which still hurt like hell when they hit the mark, which they didn’t very often.

They all took about 20 minutes for a quick sandwich at around noon, then they were back at it.

A couple of hours later, Steve was surprised to see Tony come in and beckon him over. He blocked a couple more shots and came over.

“Steve,” Tony seemed shaken, “Claude’s been take to the hospital with a heart attack. I just got a call from the hospital.”

Steve already had his helmet off and was working his gloves off.

“Did you try Ginny?” Steve asked as JP handed him his cell.

“She’s not answering.” Tony said.

Steve was already listening to Ginny’s voicemail.

“Damn.” he said. “Does she even know?”

“The nurse who called me was going down to tell her when I spoke to her.” Tony assured him.

Steve turned to JP with a shrug and said, “I’ve got to go.”

“Yes, you do.” was all JP said.

Steve headed for the change room to change into street clothes and Tony followed him.

“It’ll take you an hour and a half at this hour to drive. The chopper’s fueled up on the helipad and cleared to land at the hospital.” Tony said. “Take it and keep me in the loop.”

Steve nodded at Tony and turned away to go and change.
